Justin Doyle
Justin was born in Lancaster and began his musical career as a chorister at Westminster Cathedral. As a young 'cellist, he won the W.S. Lloyd Webber Memorial Prize for the Associate Diploma of the London College of Music. While reading Music at Cambridge University he was a choral scholar in King's College Choir, with whom he toured extensively and made numerous CD recordings and broadcasts. During his time at Cambridge he held conducting posts with the University Musical Society orchestras, as assistant to Stephen Cleobury; thereafter he continued his studies with Howard Williams.
Justin was the first to be awarded a Conductor Fellowship with the BBC Singers; this has led to a continuing relationship with the Singers, including concerts in the Bridgewater Hall and regular broadcasts. Justin has recently been appointed Artistic Director of Ryedale Festival, with effect from 2006. He holds the same position with Eastern Opera, is currently Musical Director of Essex Symphony Orchestra, Dorking Choral Society, The King's Camerata, St Albans Rehearsal Orchestra, the Stondon Singers, Da Chiesa baroque orchestra, and is Director of Music at St Paul's Church Church, Knightsbridge.
Recent engagements have included broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 (including BBC Proms), European Broadcasting Union, Swedish Radio and Bavarian Radio, and UK and world premieres of works by composers as diverse as Huw Watkins, Guo Wenjing, James Weeks, Amanda Dean and Zhou Long. Justin has assisted conductors such as Leonard Slatkin (BBC Singers), Richard Hickox (BBC National Orchestra of Wales) and Gianandrea Noseda (BBC Philharmonic) and given concerts throughout Europe. A recent recording with the BBC Singers was featured on the cover CD of BBC Music Magazine. Other recent engagements include concerts with the Manchester Camerata, Orchestra of Opera North, Hatfield Philharmonic Orchestra, Kensington Chamber Orchestra, Dorking Philharmonia, Brandenburg Sinfonia, The London Chorus, New London Orchestra and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Justin was recently awarded second prize in the prestigious Cadaqués Orchestra Conducting Competition from over 180 conductors worldwide
